Peter is a MidCoast Maine Artist and Muralist living and working in the Coastal town of Stockton Springs, Maine. He has a BFA from NYSCC at Alfred University in printmaking and sculpture as well as a MFA in printmaking and painting.
His selection of work here at Fox Island Gallery are both from his Tondo, in the round series, as well as number of smaller paintings, which often are created in thinking about color and “place” for his widely exhibited shaped panel paintings that in 2025 were the subject of a two room exhibition at The Zillman Art Museum in Bangor, Maine.
Peter treks daily into the Maine landscape, hiking, foraging, and photographing compositions and color palettes that inspire and demand his attention. Often the studio paintings begin to materialize one or more years after visits to these special places. Photographs are a reference to begin the process and often are used for only jogging his memory and allowing him to revisit these places in his minds eye. In this respect, memory and landscape have always played a crucial role in Peter’s work.
Because he paints only in the studio, his work takes on an other-worldly quality, including multiple points of view and access routes within the painting itself. He seeks fidelity in his palette, but to feelings evoked for him by the landscape rather than colors as the camera would capture them. The saturated color palette at first seems “off” but quickly transports you to these landscapes.
